Like an actual heron’s nest, our new mountain modern cottage overlooks the Ivy River and is just a short drive to Asheville’s vibrant cultural and food scene and Western North Carolina’s amazing recreational opportunities.
The cottage is your perfect retreat setting, featuring a newly redecorated open living, dining and kitchen area with 2 just completed addition of 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, sleeping 4. We have named the cottage Herons Nest because on our first visit to look at the land, a Great Blue Heron flew off a a large boulder next to the entry onto the property. It was an auspicious sign. We purchased the land, and have had no regrets since building the original cabin in 1997, and moving into our home in 1998. The original cabin was 320 square feet, and new additions and complete renovation of the interior of the cabin now provide 960 square feet of comfortable living space, giving the feeling of deep relaxation once you enter the completely private interior of the cottage.
Situated on beautiful 20 acres of land with private river access for fishing or relaxing, you can walk on trails through ever-changing woods or stroll along the Ivy River. Only 20 minutes from downtown Asheville, the peaceful retreat setting provides the best of both worlds. Just completed June 2017, this stylish cottage was designed to create a blend of a mountain cabin’s harmonious connection with the natural world and all of the newest, luxury amenities of home. Wide sweeping views from your deck or home interior provide opportunities for spotting our resident heron and other wonderful bird life, to listening to the sounds of the laughing river. Each room, including a bath with a large picture window connects you to the revitalizing experience of nature.
The cottage is ideal for small families, 2 couples or a small group. Dogs considered.

Having stayed in the Asheville area several times, we thought we'd take a long family weekend in the Mars Hill area. Heron's Nest was more than we imagined! Nestled high above the river, we had great views while hearing the quiet tumbling of the river below. Each room has an incredible view, each large modern window, a panorama of nature. The kitchen is well stocked, we cooked breakfast and dinner, relaxed watching the Olympics. The stroll down to the river is a lovely walk, delightful to fly fish or just sit and enjoy the soothing sound of the water rushing by. The decor is impeccable, the home is newly appointed, great bathrooms, comfy beds with personal touches of art and whimsy. We loved it here and could have stayed for, well, almost forever. The local hikes are nearby, Asheville is one of our favorite places to visit, fun pinbabll arcade, antique cars, local artists at the Grove -- all so close. We even got to see the Bluesgrass festival while we were there. We visited and fished at Lake Nebo. Richard and Joanna included the original rustic nature of the cabin, when they added on the stunning modern touches that blended both worlds beautifully. Loved the deck, loved everything. Hope to be back again!

Herons Nest was an amazing experience. The morning hikes were so peaceful and enjoyable. The view from the back porch is amazing. We could sit there and drink our morning coffee or enjoy and afternoon drink. The cabin itself is so nicely decorated with everything you need and more. We had a wonderful time at this cottage. A short drive to Asheville, or just relax at the cottage tucked into the woods. Easy communication with the friendly owners if need be. The cottage was very clean and has been totally updated. We found our time flew by, as this place was very easy to kick back and relax in. Very recommendable, we would certainly return if in the area.
