Ormond by the Sea is just north of Daytona Beach, famous for the Daytona International Speedway, Spring Break and annual events for motorcycle and automotive enthusiasts. In addition to all the attractions of Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach, the location is an ideal base for your vacation to Central Florida. From here, you’re 50 miles south of Saint Augustine, 60 miles from either Orlando, Disney, Universal Studios or the Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral, and just 80 miles south of Jacksonville.
Ormond Beach developed at the turn of the 20th century as a vacation retreat for the country’s ultra wealthy, including the Vanderbilts, Flaglers, Astors, and John D. Rockefeller, whose home “Casements” now serves as the Ormond Beach Community Enrichment Center. Early automotive pioneers drove their motor cars up and down the hard-packed sand beach, earning it nick name, “The Birthplace of Speed”. Driving is still permitted on parts of Ormond Beach but cars are prohibited at the northern end of the beach.
The City of Ormond Beach is located on either side of the Halifax River, which is part of the Intra-coastal Waterway (a series of federally maintained navigation channels extending from Norfolk, VA to Miami, Fl). There are wonderful walking trails along the river.
