Kate's Place was shipped to Crested Butte piece by piece in 1922, as an original Montgomery Ward's kit home. It was erected by a local miner and built on a mountain stone foundation. The home is named after Kate Starika, who lived in the home as a widow for more than 60 years. In 1990, Kathy and Doug purchased the home and restored it's Victorian charm. The home was recognized by the Board of zoning and Architectural Review as the best example of historical renovation completed in 1990.
'We tried to maintain as much of the historical integrity as possible', said Doug, ' the renovation was a labor of love.' The interior and exterior paint and wall coverings all reflect the homes Victorian beginnings. As much of the original wood trim and flooring were retained. Beautiful leaded glass door and side panels were designed in Dallas to fit the Victorian theme. Not only does this make a statement about the home, it also makes for a charming entrance into a wonderful enclosed sun room.
