The house was designed and built by the owners in 1982. It is on a 6.5 acre plot with no other houses within sight or within earshot. In Westchester close to Rye, White Plains, Mount Kisco, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Chappaqua, New York City, Greenwich, Stamford.
The top floor has a master bedroom that has its own large dressing room. Attached to it is a twin room, great for accommodating young children close by. There are two additional large bedrooms with queen beds and their own full bathrooms. Laundry is on the same floor as the bedrooms for easy access.
On the main floor is the kitchen, dining room, living room and study. There are also three walk in closets: one in the mudroom and two in the hall. The kitchen is fully stocked with a recently replaced oven and stove top, with utensils, flatware and pots & pans. Just outside the kitchen is a terrace with a rose bush growing over a trellis and a bubbling fountain amidst a lushly planted garden. There is a table and chairs with an umbrella for dining outside when the temperature is right.
The dining room is attached to the kitchen and has space at the dining table for 6-8 people. The dining room connects to the living room which has french doors that open on to a large terrace that looks over the gardens, also an option for dining outdoors. The living room has a wood burning fire place.
Down the hall from the living room is the study which also has a wood burning fireplace, as well as a large desk for anyone needing to get work done. The bookcases are stocked with books for those inclined to read.
The playroom on the bottom floor of the house opens up to the gardens has two full bed fold out sofas and room for air mattresses, if additional space is needed. It also acts as a great rec room for children (or adults!) to play.
The outdoors is wonderful in summer and winter alike. The classical English gardens are professionally designed and consistently maintained which creates a lush and chic environment.
The summer time is ideal for playing or dining outdoors and making use of the heated pool. The Mianus River is a 10 minute walk where you can hike along the river as far as you'd like to go, fish, or look for rose quartz. In the winter there are two large hills on the property great for sledding, and the hike to the river is very beautiful at this time as well.
Bedford is a very private and quaint escape from larger cities, but has access to ample attractions close by. Manhattan is an easy drive or train away (1 hour), ski towns in Vermont and Upstate NY are within a couple of hours drive, Storm King Art Center is an hour away, Ward Pound Ridge Reserve is 20 minutes away, and there is a strong community of road cyclists in the area who enjoy the winding back roads of Westchester County.
The house has both AC and heating and is well insulated, keeping it very cozy in the depths of winter.
The house is great for a family vacation, lodging for those in town for a wedding or other major event, a reunion, a group of friends who want to get away from Manhattan for a long weekend, or anyone who wants a peaceful escape.
