Welcome to Pau Hana, a large new oceanfront house with pool on the East Coast of Hawaii Island. Perfect temperature all year round. Watch and hear the whales during the winter, observe large sea turtles all the time.
Situated in a quiet neighborhood only 30 minutes from Hilo (2nd largest city in Hawaii) and its International Airport.
We have a 35ft pool with automatic pool cover, ideal for swimming laps or just relaxing and watching the waves. From the lava cliffs in front of the house you can see Mauna Kea (13,800ft) on a clear day, with snow on its peak during the winter.
The house, completed late 2014, was rebuilt on the site of an original fishing shack built in the 60s. It has 3 bedrooms including a master bedroom with spectacular ocean views. Almost all of the ocean-facing side of the house is glass, giving fantastic ocean views from the kitchen and living room. The second bathroom contains a giant tub with room for two. The 2200 sq ft house was designed by the owners and is tastefully decorated (please see photos).
Custom made shoji doors crafted from the original exterior walls (redwood) are throughout the house. Big windows and skylights bring in the Hawaiian sunshine. All doors are 3 ft wide and custom made, also from the original redwood (interior) and local eucalyptus (exterior). Kitchen cabinets/drawers are also made from the original redwood in the home, and the granite counter is locally known as “Green Sand” as it looks like Hawaii’s own Green Sand Beach.
While the house is not ADA compliant, it is wheelchair accessible.
Broadband internet and wi-fi is provided, as is cable TV on a new 39-inch HD television set that is internet enabled. Kitchen is fully equipped with brand-new appliances, including dishwasher. Brand new washing machine and dryer also available. The master bedroom has a King-size bed and a walk-in closet. The second bedroom has a Queen-size bed while the third bedroom has a double futon bed. Bathrooms have tropical vessel sinks and large walk-in showers. There is also an outdoor shower. Almost unique to East Hawaii oceanfront, we have a sizable yard on the ocean side. (Please note, the yard has been recently landscaped with spots of new grass still growing.)
For those concerned with their carbon hoofprint, the house's 18 solar panels produce enough electricity to cover normal use (we are on the grid) and we harvest clear clean rainwater from the roof - but triple-filter it just in case.
Although we are oceanfront, the house has been built back far enough and with double glazing in the front so that you can 'turn off' the sound of the waves if you wish. This also avoids the sea spray which can cover windows of houses too close to the surf.
If you would like to book, we can hold your booking for 24 hours at absolutely no cost while you try to arrange flights and a rental car. Let us know. Note also that it is often cheaper to fly to Kona (KOA) instead of Hilo (ITO) - if you don't mind the two-hour drive. Many of our guests do this and use the drive for sightseeing.
There is no construction going on anywhere near our house.
PLEASE NOTE: This house is not suitable for children under 12. It is dangerous for them due to the lava cliffs and the swimming pool which can be accessed directly from the living room. Please let us know the ages of any children included in your booking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) :
1. Do you have air conditioning?
No! Most people don't, it's not necessary in Hawaii. Even in summer, the
average high is under 84 degrees. Every room has a ceiling fan and a
portable fan and we have ocean breezes from the Pacific Ocean, which
starts at the bottom of our yard.
2. Do you have a hot tub?
No! We enjoy a hot tub as much as anyone when we're in Canada, but in a warm
climate we find them uncomfortable and unnecessary. If you really crave a
good soak you can make use of our mega two-person bathtub where you can crank
up the temperature hotter than any hot tub and enjoy your champagne.
3. Can I have my wedding reception at your house - is there room for the DJ to set up his stuff on the lanai?
Unfortunately, this is not a party house. We live in a quiet area and we don't want to annoy our neighbors. Loud laughter - yes. Loud music - no.
4. Are you really oceanfront?
Yes! The Pacific Ocean is our water feature. Good question though - there are many houses listed as "oceanfront" on VRBO that are miles away from the water.
5. Can I bring my toddlers to splash in your pool?
Alas! Our house is not suitable for children under 12. The pool is unfenced and there are lava rock cliffs at the end of our yard. It is too dangerous for small children.
6. Do you have internet?
Yes! We have cable internet that is fast enough to support streaming of movies on Netflix (which is available on our TV). We also have wi-fi. Many houses in Hawaii do not have cable - we were on dial-up just two years ago.
7. Is your area free of construction noise?
Yes! It's very quiet; we have an empty lot on one side and a small house with a semi-retired couple (hi Andy!) on the other side
