Orchard Cottage offers year round vacation rentals, weekend getaways, family reunions and retreats in the heart of York Harbor, Maine. Our spacious, charmingly appointed, eight bedroom home with five bathrooms (one will be all new for Summer 2017) is ideally located for seaside activities, enjoys harbor views and ocean breezes and is just a two minute walk to the beach.The house sleeps up to 14. We also have an option to rent only the first and second floors to sleep 9, at a reduced rate. Please inquire.

The large "cottage" is in a quiet neighborhood with close proximity to other neighbors, yet is very private and has a terrace, fenced in yard and gardens. You can enjoy this comfortable, spacious and gracious, renovated 1913 home in any season! There is plenty of space for family gatherings and entertaining, as well as nooks for privacy. Authentic old fashioned charm combines with modern convenience to make for a comfortable stay. If you are looking for a place for family and friends to get together in a wonderful environment, look no further.

Relax on the porch with a harbor view or enjoy the large yard, terrace and gardens, while lying in the hammock. Walk to the beach to swim in the pristine Ocean. Explore the "Cliff Walk" with spectacular Ocean views. Or stroll along "Fisherman's Walk" at the banks of the York River, across the "Wiggly Bridge", a tiny suspension bridge, through trails in "Steedman Woods", a nature preserve. Buy lobster on the dock. Enjoy evenings on the terrace while children play. Cook in a fully equipped cook's kitchen or enjoy eating out at local restaurants, such as the York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, Chapman Cottage or Foster's, which are just a few minutes' walk away. We have parking for 4-5 cars.

There are lots of common spaces to dine and relax: an outdoor terrace, outdoor porch, interior all seasons porch, office/game room as well as the living and dining rooms which are elegant, comfortable and spacious. Living room seats eight comfortably and additional chairs can be brought in from other rooms to seat at least twelve. Dining table seats eight, plus extension table for 4 more. Dining room round glass side table can seat an additional four, or six with table topper, to accommodate up to 14. All seasons porch seats nine.

Kitchen table seats four and the kitchen Island seats two with stools. There are also two comfortable wicker chairs for relaxing with a cup of coffee. Gas stove has five burners and two ovens. "Cook's Kitchen" is fully equipped. Pantry adjoining kitchen provides lots of storage space. Bar pantry allows for gracious and easy entertaining. First floor bedroom suite provides space and privacy, and is a great spot for those who have trouble with stairs. Beautiful staircase leads to large hall and upstairs bedrooms. Back porch/mudroom provides more space for storage. Back staircase allows for great flow. There is a quiet alcove for reading in the upstairs hall. We have Cable TV and Wireless Internet. The Third Floor Bedrooms have Air Conditioning.

YORK HARBOR AND SURROUNDINGS

Just a two minute walk from the house you'll find York Harbor's lovely crescent beach. The ocean water is clear and pristine and perfect for a swim or just to cool your feet. The beach has fine, soft sand which is perfect for building sandcastles or taking a moonlight stroll. The surf is usually gentle and body surfing and boogie boarding are popular.

There's a cliff walk which takes you along the water's edge and provides spectacular views. Magnificent homes and dramatic rocky bluffs dot the coastline.

Just across from the property there's a beautiful park that sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean. There are 3 restaurants within walking distance of the house and two inns. There are many other wonderful restaurants in York as well as in Ogunquit and Portsmouth, N.H., which are both just 15-20 minutes away. There is a binder in the house filled with brochures and menus from many of the surrounding restaurants and attractions.

York Harbor boasts a varied and unique natural beauty. The York River empties into a peacefully protected harbor and then into the wide Atlantic. Just upriver from the harbor are inlets and grassy wetlands perfect for kayaking. The York River is tidal and its swift current and accompanying eddies make for a fun ride.Walks along the river's edge provide some stunning vistas. Boat lovers can see many of the classic boats, typical of the Maine coast, that are moored along the river. You can stroll through the "Steedman Woods" by crossing over the "Wiggly Bridge", a short walk up the river and just north of Route 103. Between Steedman Woods and Sewell's Bridge you can explore Hancock Wharf. Once owned and operated by John Hancock, the barn which housed the operation has been preserved and is open to the public. Stop in next door to see exhibits of New England artists at the George Marshall Store Gallery. Just up the river is Sewell's Bridge where you can fish or stop to pick up fresh lobster, right off the boats.

The back roads and trails around York Harbor are perfect for walking, running or biking. You can enjoy live theatre at the Ogunquit Playhouse, and concerts or movies at the Portsmouth Music Hall. Charter a boat and go fishing or lobstering. Go whale watching. Go shopping at the Kittery Outlets or drive to LL Bean in Freeport. Visit York's Wild Kingdom the museums of Portland York Beach Amusement Park, Ogunquit galleries or spend an afternoon at the historic village of Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth.

Spend the day in York Harbor: Take an early morning stroll on the beach. Take Fisherman's Walk along the river to the Wiggly Bridge. Pick up lobsters for dinner at Sewell's Bridge. Visit John Hancock Wharf and George Marshall Store Gallery. Spend the afternoon at the beach and enjoy the Cliff Walk.

Spend the day in York Village: Have Breakfast at the Bagel Basket. Visit Historic York including the Olde Goal (Jail), a one room Schoolhouse,

John Hancock Wharf and the old George Marshall Store Gallery. Visit the local shops, the Farmer's Market, and Stonewall Kitchens for lunch and shopping.

Spend the day in York Beach: Walk along Long Sands and Short Sands Beaches. Visit the famous Nubble Lighthouse. Go duck pin bowling, and watch salt water taffy being made in York Beach after lunch at Goldenrod's old fashioned soda fountain restaurant. Visit the playground, the zoo and the amusement park. Drive up to Cape Neddick Beach.

Spend the day in Kittery: Explore Fort Foster, on Gerrish Island, and Fort McClary, and view the lighthouses. Have lunch at Chauncey Creek Lobster Pound. Shop at the Kittery Outlets. Don't miss Kittery Trading Post. Visit “When Pigs Fly” bakery on the way home for some fabulous breads.

Spend the day in Ogunquit: Explore the shops, restaurants, and galleries. Walk along the “Marginal Way” a paved pathway along the ocean's edge. Enjoy breathtaking views. Go for a swim at the Ogunquit beach. Have lunch at Barnacle Billy's in Perkins Cove. Don't miss the Harbor Candy Shop.

Spend the day in Portsmouth, New Hamshire, just 15 minutes away: Stroll the cobblestone streets. Explore the shops and many restaurants. Visit the historic village at Strawbery Banke. Watch the boats go by on the river from Prescott Park. Enjoy an outdoor concert. Check out the tugboats. Go whale watching or visit the Isles of Shoals by boat.

Spend the day in Portland, just 45 minutes away: Visit the Old Wharf area, Commercial Street and its shops and restaurants. Visit the Art Museum, the Children's Museum and the Firehouse Museum.

Originally named Kelly Cottage, Frank D. Marshall built the house in 1913. During the boom of 1880-1890, many summer mansions and cottages were built in York Harbor while the town joined Newport and Bar Harbor as fashionable East Coast summer destinations.
