.Enjoy the many attractions of Old San Juan without the problems of access and parking, from your own apartment, in the heart of the downtown gallery/shopping district: bustling during the day, and quiet at night.
You are on the best and safest block in Old San Juan, down the hill, right in the middle of the finest shops, galleries and restaurants.
You are surrounded by historic monuments: one block north of the Cristo Chapel, Pigeon Park, and La Fortaleza, giving us the added security of being probably the only property with policemen right on the corner 24/7, because the Governor lives there.
One block West is the Plaza de Armas, where you'll find cafes, grocer and drug stores as well as a stop for the free trollys that go around San Juan, and taxi stand. You are 2 blocks South of the El Convento Hotel and the Puerta de San Juan, the ancient gateway to the city. Here you enter the middle of the "Paseo": a beautiful mile long walkway along the bay that stretches from the ancient cemetery to the cruise ship docks. This is a great morning jog or walk.
Legendary nightlife is 4 blocks away: "SoFo" restaurant district to the east, and San Sebastian St. for clubs & bars to the North (up the hill).
If you plan to stay in Old San Juan, you won't need a car. If you will have a car anyway, you can usually find free on-street parking nearby, but it's a bit of a hunt.
If you prefer, there are several inexpensive parking lots within a few blocks. Maps showing proximity to parking and attractions are shown on the map which is the last photo.
WHERE’S THE BEACH?
We are not beachfront, but Old San Juan is where everything else is. Most people choose to stay in Old San Juan because this is where everyone comes at night, so traffic coming into town then can be a nightmare. It's easier to get in & out of town during the day to go to the beach. That way you can return, shower, maybe take a nap before going out again. Then after dinner, or whatever, you just have to walk a few blocks and you’re home, instead of hassling with traffic & finding a cab.
The nearest beach is a long walk, or a 5 min cab or bus ride. We have a picture among ours here, and you can look up Escambron. It is a well maintained, free, clean, safe, beautiful beach; the only one with a lifeguard. Unlike the hotel beaches, it gets sun all day, and there are plenty of palms for shade.
The beach is part of a very interesting park with historic battlements & part of the old walls of the city. From the beach you see both forts.
Early mornings the women’s water aerobics group meets there. Very friendly group, you can work out with them for free. There is an outdoor snack bar that also serves drinks cheap, and a reasonable restaurant with outdoor terrace and indoor air-conditioned dining room, serving local food.
You will not find a better beach in San Juan.
PARKING
Since Old San Juan was built in the 1500s, none of the buildings in old San Juan have parkling.
On street parking in Old San Juan ,is free but finding a space can be challenging. Several really cheap pay parking lots are within a few blocks. (see map in large photo) Unless you're planning on exploring the Island, you won't need a car. Old San Juan is only 8 sq. blocks, and we are right in the middle. We are 20 min. from the airport, and there are always cabs there to meet each flight. For local trips there are cabs on the next corner, or you can call one. Numbers are programmed into your phone.
